Deputy Leader of Sinn Fein Mary Lou McDonald spoke to the media outside Leinster House, the seat of the Oireachtas, in Dublin on Monday following the death of Former Deputy First Minister and leader of Sinn Fein Martin McGuinness.

Lou McDonald said that the ex-IRA chief of staff was "an inspirational Irish Republican, a tireless worker for Ireland for unity, for peace and for reconciliation", and added that his legacy was "a peaceful future" and "the advancement of the movement for Irish unity".

"I know I speak for all of us here when I say that we are now more determined than ever to see that political journey [peace and reunification] to its conclusion and to see us over the line living in a fully united, peaceful and socially just Ireland. Martin would expect and accept nothing less than that from all of us."

McGuinness died at the age of 66 in the Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry.
